Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has issued a stern warning to individuals within the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) who are engaging in corruption, mismanagement and misuse of resources.

In a bold and unapologetic statement on his X (Twitter) platform, Muhoozi declared that any officer or group involved in such selfish acts should either reform immediately or leave UPDF before they are found out.

The declaration has sparked widespread debate about the state of affairs within UPDF, accountability in the armed forces and the possible implications of his statement on Uganda’s military.

Muhoozi has long been known for his outspoken views on military discipline and governance. His recent remarks have raised eyebrows as they suggest that corruption within the UPDF is a significant issue requiring urgent attention.

His call for immediate reforms implies that there could already be investigations underway on the growing intolerance for unethical behavior in the armed forces.

The timing of Muhoozi’s statement is particularly interesting. Uganda is approaching a critical period in its political landscape with discussions surrounding the 2026 elections already in motion.

Additionally, his warning comes amid growing public concerns over corruption in Uganda’s public institutions. UPDF has historically been viewed as one of the country’s most disciplined entities but reports of misappropriation of funds, land grabbing and misconduct among some officers have occasionally surfaced.

With this warning, UPDF could see a wave of investigations and possible dismissals of high-ranking officers involved in corruption. This could shake the military hierarchy and even lead to political consequences, depending on who gets implicated.

However, opposition argue that such statements have been made before with little or no follow-up action.

Beyond military, Muhoozi’s statement touches on the broader issue of corruption in Uganda where many Ugandans are tired of hearing about corruption scandals with no real consequences.
