National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi, and Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya today visited Dr. Kizza Besigye at Luzira Prison, demanding transparency on his health condition.
This visit comes at time when Dr. Kizza Besigye has been rushed to a private clinic in Bugolobi for urgent medical attention due to his deteriorating health and this has been confirmed by his lawyer.
According to his legal team, Besigye developed complications while in detention, prompting authorities to rush him to private clinic at Bugolobi Village Mall instead of Mulago National Referral Hospital as had been previously demanded by medical professionals.
“Dr. Besigye was taken to a private medical facility under unclear conditions. We still don’t have a full medical report, and access remains restricted,” his lawyer revealed.
After arriving at the maximum-security facility, the opposition leaders were visibly concerned as they pushed for access to the former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) leader, whose deteriorating health has sparked national and international outcry.
The growing demands from medical professionals and human rights activists for the government to release a detailed medical report on Besigye’s condition and ensure he receives proper treatment prompt this visit.
The Uganda Medical Association (UMA) has already warned that delaying access to specialized care could worsen his health complications.
So far, authorities have remained tight-lipped on Besigye’s exact medical status, fueling fears of deliberate medical neglect.
The Uganda Prisons Service insists he is receiving “adequate care,” but opposition figures argue that only independent doctors can verify this claim.
