Alex Luswa Luwemba has publicly announced his decision to rejoin the National Unity Platform (NUP) after his controversial move to contest in the Kawempe North by-election as an independent.

Luwemba who now refers to himself as a ‘prodigal son’ has expressed willingness to accept any punishment from the party even if it means mopping floors or cleaning Chairman Nyanzi’s toilet.

“I will rejoin NUP and serve any punishment they’ll give me for acting prodigal. Even if they tell me to clean Chairman Nyanzi’s toilet or mopping the entire headquarters, I will. I spoke to my President and secretary general and I told them why I contested. I was like a defender, my role was to defend the opposition from losing to NRM,” Alex Luswa Luwemba has said.

Luwemba, who initially ran against the official NUP candidate faced backlash from party loyalists who saw his candidacy as a betrayal.

However in his defense, he insists that his intention was never to weaken the opposition but rather to protect it from a potential NRM victory.

“I spoke to my President (Bobi Wine) and Secretary General explaining why I contested,” Luwemba revealed. “I was like a defender. My role was to ensure the opposition did not lose to the NRM.”

His comments have ignited mixed reactions within Uganda’s political landscape. Some NUP supporters see his return as a sign of humility and a step toward strengthening the opposition while others view it as a desperate move to salvage his political future.

Meanwhile, the NUP leadership has yet to issue an official statement on his reinstatement leaving supporters wondering whether he will be welcomed back with open arms or made an example of through strict disciplinary measures.
