The bail hearing for National Unity Platform (NUP) comrades Achileo Kivumbi, Gaddafi Mugumya and Grace Smart Wakabi has been adjourned to April 16th, 2025.

This unexpected delay has sparked outrage among opposition supporters, human rights activists and Ugandans who believe the charges against the trio are politically motivated.

As the sun rose over Masaka High Court this morning, the atmosphere was tense. Hundreds of NUP supporters covered in the party’s signature red berets and chanting slogans of freedom gathered outside the court premises to show unwavering solidarity with their comrades. Inside the courtroom, the mood was equally charged.

“Our comrades are not criminals, they are political prisoners. These charges are trumped up to silence opposition. We demand justice and we demand it now!”

The NUP leadership including legal representatives and party officials expressed frustration over the adjournment accusing the state of employing delay tactics to keep political opponents behind bars.

This is not the first time Uganda’s opposition has found itself at odds with the judiciary. Over the years, numerous NUP members and supporters have been arrested under controversial circumstances often facing prolonged detentions without trial.

The slogan #FreeAllPoliticalPrisonersInUganda has become a rallying cry for those who feel the judicial system is weaponized against the opposition.

“Justice delayed is justice denied,” said Joel Ssenyonyi, NUP Spokesperson. “Our comrades are asking for a speedy trial because they know they are innocent. Why does the state keep postponing their day in court if they believe they have a solid case?”

The turnout at Masaka High Court today was a powerful reminder that NUP’s support base remains resilient despite the political pressures.

Leaders from various regions converged at the court to stand with Kivumbi, Mugumya and Wakabi emphasizing that the fight for justice transcends individual cases.

“This is not just about the three comrades, it’s about every Ugandan who believes in freedom and democracy.”

While the state prosecution cited procedural delays for the adjournment, Opposition argue that these excuses are a smokescreen for political interference.

Legal experts have questioned why cases involving opposition figures often face repeated postponements raising concerns about impartiality within the judiciary.

The National Unity Platform and its supporters have vowed not to back down. Until justice is served, the chants of #FreeAllPoliticalPrisonersInUganda will continue to echo across Uganda.
