The Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament Anita Among will today preside over the opening ceremony of the 2nd Women’s Parliament a landmark event in Uganda’s ongoing commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment.

The highly anticipated session set to begin at 10:00 AM is a key part of Uganda’s celebrations for International Women’s Day bringing together female legislators, activists and policymakers to deliberate on pressing issues affecting women across the country.

The Women’s Parliament serves as a vital space for discussions on policies that directly impact Ugandan women ranging from economic empowerment and political participation to gender-based violence and access to education.

Speaker Anita Among a vocal advocate for women’s rights is expected to rally Parliament to adopt more inclusive policies and strengthen enforcement mechanisms for existing gender laws.

“Empowering women is not just about representation but about ensuring that their voices translate into action,” Among has previously stated, underscoring her commitment to championing women’s rights within Uganda’s legislative framework.

The Women’s Parliament will tackle a range of critical topics, including the implementation of gender-responsive budgeting to ensure adequate funding for women-centered programs, strategies to combat gender-based violence and ensure the protection of women’s rights.

This special sitting is more than just a ceremonial event, it is a bold statement on Uganda’s progress and challenges in the fight for gender equality.

With high-profile attendees from government agencies, civil society and the international community, the session is expected to yield tangible commitments toward advancing women’s empowerment.

Uganda has made significant strides in promoting women’s representation in politics with women holding key leadership positions in government.

However disparities still exist, particularly in rural areas where economic and cultural barriers hinder women’s participation in governance and decision-making.

The public has been encouraged to follow the proceedings and contribute to discussions via social media under the hashtag #WomenParliamentUg.

Women activists and community leaders have urged Parliament to use this opportunity to drive impactful legislative changes rather than just symbolic rhetoric.
