On March 21, 2024, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba was appointed as Uganda’s Chief of Defense Forces (CDF) officially taking over on March 28 at the UPDF 4th Division Headquarters in Gulu City.

A year later, the nation reflects on his leadership, achievements and the challenges that have defined his tenure at the control of Uganda’s military.

Gen. Muhoozi’s leadership has been characterized by a series of strategic military operations aimed at strengthening national security.

Under his command, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have intensified efforts to combat terrorism particularly in the eastern region where Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels continue to pose a threat.

His tenure has also seen increased military cooperation with regional forces particularly in joint security operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and South Sudan.

One of the most notable achievements of Gen. Muhoozi’s first year has been the modernization of Uganda’s military store and the introduction of new training programs to enhance the capabilities of the armed forces.

His administration has prioritized intelligence-led operations and the deployment of advanced technology in border security.

However, Gen. Muhoozi’s tenure has not been without controversy. His strong social media presence often expressing personal opinions on sensitive political and security matters has sparked debates among Ugandans.

Opposition argue that his outspoken nature sometimes blurs the lines between military professionalism and personal political ambitions.

In addition, concerns have been raised about the increasing militarization of Uganda’s governance structures with some accusing the UPDF of taking an active role in political affairs.

His close relationship with President Museveni has also fueled speculation about a potential succession plan further entangling his military role with national politics.

As Gen. Muhoozi marks his first year as CDF, the challenges ahead remain significant. The growing insurgency threats, tensions with neighboring countries and calls for military neutrality in governance will test his leadership in the coming years.

While his supporters hail him as a transformational leader, his opposition warn of the dangers of an increasingly politicized military.

The coming months will likely shape the legacy of his command and determine whether he remains a purely military leader or transitions into Uganda’s political landscape.

One year later, Gen. Muhoozi’s tenure as CDF has been a mix of military success, public debate and political intrigue.
