Mbale City, Eastern Uganda – With Uganda’s 2026 general elections fast approaching, National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine today spearheaded a Democracy Resilience Training for over 40 districts in Eastern Uganda aimed at preparing district and constituency leaders, party structures and aspiring flag bearers for the coming elections.
The event, held in Mbale saw a wave of defections from the ruling party National Resistance Movement (NRM) adding fuel to NUP’s grassroots momentum.
The training brought together hundreds of mobilizers under the theme of building political resilience, electoral readiness and ideological clarity in what Bobi Wine described as “a decisive chapter in Uganda’s liberation story.”
He challenged attendees to rise beyond fear and intimidation as they carry the party’s message deeper into villages, towns and cities.
The session also turned into a political altar of conversion with several individuals from the ruling party National Resistance Movement (NRM) publicly crossing over to join the NUP ranks.
Though their names remain closely guarded, NUP leadership confirmed that the defectors included lower-tier mobilizers, youth leaders and at least two former LC3 officials from Bugisu sub-region.
“Our movement is a train that can’t be stopped,” said a senior NUP official. “Even those who once stood against us now want to be part of this revolution.”
Participants were also equipped with updated voter mapping data, door-to-door mobilization kits and legal briefings on how to protect themselves and their communities during electoral operations.
Choosing Mbale as the launch pad for Eastern region activities is no accident. The city, historically viewed as a swing region, has increasingly shown signs of political dissatisfaction, particularly among unemployed youth and marginalized rural communities.
The NUP believes Eastern Uganda is ripe for political change and today’s massive turnout seems to validate that strategy.
The UP4 Democracy Resilience Program is part of a nationwide series with upcoming trainings scheduled in Northern and Western Uganda in the coming months.
