Uganda’s Defence Ministry Accuses European Diplomats of Fueling Rebellion

The Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs through the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has sounded a stark warning against what it calls foreign-sponsored rebellion accusing some accredited European missions in Kampala of financing groups intent on destabilizing the NRM government.

In a fiery double press release issued, the Department of Defence Public Information named and shamed the German Ambassador to Uganda, His Excellency Mathias Schauer for allegedly engaging in illegal and clandestine activities in violation of the 1961 Vienna Diplomatic Conventions.

The UPDF insists these activities are not isolated and are part of a broader plot to manipulate Uganda’s internal affairs for foreign and opposition gains.

“The intelligence services are aware of his clearly undiplomatic practices that have been taking place in different parts of the country for some time,” reads the signed statement by Col. Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information.

According to the second communiqué, Uganda’s security and intelligence agencies have over recent months arrested and interrogated multiple individuals suspected of involvement in armed rebellion, plots to bomb public spaces and the vandalism of key electricity infrastructure.

The most affected areas include Wakiso, Mukono, Luweero, Kayunga, Masaka, and parts of central Uganda.

The suspects many of whom allegedly masquerade as opposition activists linked to the National Unity Platform (NUP) now face terrorism and economic sabotage charges in Ugandan courts.

“Some of the arrested suspects previously passed off as opposition political party activists,” the Defence Ministry stated.

Authorities claim that these rebel cells are coordinated efforts aimed at sabotaging the country’s energy network, compromising public safety and ultimately disrupting the 2026 general elections.

However, the most explosive claim is the direct accusation against European embassies, which the government believes are complicit in financing and mobilizing traitorous groups.

This accusation rekindles tension between Kampala and the West over issues of governance, human rights and political freedom.

“There is strong evidence tracing some of the funding and mobilisation for the negative and traitorous groups opposed to the NRM government to some accredited European diplomatic missions in Kampala,” the statement alleges.

The government has vowed to pursue diplomatic channels to address the matter while warning that further interference will be met with decisive action.

Meanwhile, the youth of Uganda often seen as the heartbeat of political change were singled out for caution.

“They are advised to avoid falling in the trap set by enemy political actors who seek to exploit their vulnerability for political ends,” the Defence Ministry urged, adding that the youth should instead embrace government-led wealth creation and development initiatives.

The UPDF and Inter-Agency Security Committee have vowed to take firm action against the alleged rebel ring leaders, organizers and funders who according to intelligence, operate in and around Kampala’s ghetto communities.
