Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has officially picked nomination forms from the NRM Electoral Commission headquarters in Kyadondo, signaling his intent to run for a second term as Member of Parliament for Ruhinda North Constituency.
The midday event was anything but ordinary, symbolically marking Tayebwa’s recommitment to what he describes as leadership rooted in community engagement and national impact.
“To me, leadership means going down to the people, listening, mobilizing, and representing their voices not only in Parliament but even at global levels where necessary,” Tayebwa said shortly after receiving his forms from NRM EC Chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi.
Known for his expressiveness in Parliament and his growing reputation as a statesman, Tayebwa’s re-election bid is backed by what he describes as a calling to serve beyond politics, a mission to uplift.
“I feel energised to continue serving both my constituents and the country at large as Deputy Speaker,” he wrote on his X platform (formerly Twitter).
Observers say Tayebwa’s combination of humility, policy intellect, and diplomatic tact has earned him both admiration and influence within the NRM and among opposition circles alike.
His calm yet firm approach to debates has seen him steer the House through some of the most divisive legislative moments with rare statesmanship.
Ruhinda North Constituency in Mitooma District, Western Uganda, has historically been an NRM stronghold, but it’s also an area with high expectations. Locals demand more than speeches, they want road infrastructure, access to water, better education, and modern agriculture.
Tayebwa has vowed not only to return to Parliament but also to deepen his footprint within local communities, stating that he plans to intensify door-to-door engagement, village meetings, and youth empowerment forums.
“Leadership is not about being seen on TV. It’s about the trenches, the farms, the schools, the health centres, it’s about real lives,” Tayebwa emphasized.
The NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson, Dr. Tanga Odoi, who handed Tayebwa the forms, applauded his commitment to a peaceful and rules-based campaign.
“We thank Hon. Tayebwa for respecting the party structures and leading by example. This is what we expect from all our leaders: discipline, service, and respect for the party constitution,” Dr. Odoi said.
NRM is currently in full swing, preparing for its internal primaries, which are expected to be highly competitive, especially in areas with powerful incumbents and rising challengers.
While Tayebwa is largely seen as a sure bet for the Ruhinda North NRM ticket, his high-profile role as Deputy Speaker also places him under greater scrutiny.
Still, Tayebwa’s strategic mix of grassroots mobilization and policy leadership could set a new standard for how young leaders can balance village realities with national responsibilities.
With nomination forms in hand, Tayebwa now enters the next phase of community consultations and NRM primary campaigns. If he sails through, his presence in the 12th Parliament seems all but certain.
However, for Tayebwa, it’s not just about winning. It’s about walking the talk of transformational leadership.
“I promise to uphold the values of the NRM and continue building a Uganda where every citizen feels heard, empowered, and included,” he concluded.
