NUP Unveils Parliamentary Leadership and Shadow Cabinet for the 12th Parliament

KAMPALA, Uganda

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has unveiled its parliamentary leadership team and shadow cabinet for Uganda’s 12th Parliament, signaling the party’s preparations to strengthen its role as the leading opposition force in the new legislative term.

The announcement was made during a press briefing by the party secretariat, where officials introduced the parliamentary leadership structure that will guide the party’s activities in Parliament over the next five years.

At the center of the new leadership team is Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi, who was unveiled as the leader of opposition for the 12th Parliament.

The party also announced that its Election Management Committee had selected Irene Nampala as the official flag bearer for the forthcoming Kalangala electoral contest, adding another political development to the day’s announcements.

NUP used the press conference to formally introduce what it described as its official parliamentary leadership and shadow cabinet for the 12th Parliament.

Shadow cabinets are a common feature among opposition parties and are designed to assign legislators responsibility for monitoring government ministries, policies, and public programs from the opposition benches.

Party officials said the newly unveiled structure is intended to strengthen oversight and coordinate the party’s legislative agenda inside Parliament.

The unveiling comes at a time when the 12th Parliament is taking shape following the swearing-in of Members of Parliament and the election of parliamentary leadership.

As the largest opposition party by parliamentary representation, NUP’s choices for leadership positions and shadow cabinet assignments are likely to shape parliamentary debates, oversight activities, and opposition strategy during the new term.

Joel Ssenyonyi, who has emerged as one of the party’s most visible parliamentary figures in recent years, is expected to play a central role in coordinating legislative priorities and opposition engagement within the House.

Alongside the parliamentary announcements, the party’s Election Management Committee unveiled Irene Nampala as its official candidate for the upcoming Kalangala contest.

The party did not immediately provide additional details regarding campaign timelines or electoral strategy during the announcement.

With parliamentary leadership structures now unveiled, attention is expected to shift toward committee assignments, legislative priorities, and how opposition parties position themselves in the early months of the 12th Parliament.

The release of the shadow cabinet also provides the first indication of how NUP intends to organize its oversight role and respond to government policy in the new parliamentary term.

As Parliament begins its work, the opposition’s structure and strategy are expected to remain central to political discussions both inside and outside the House.
