Lukwago Still Missing as PFF, Lawyers Demand Answers

KAMPALA, Uganda

People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) says its leader and former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago remains missing days after he was allegedly taken from his home in Wakaliga by armed men dressed in military uniform.

The party says Lukwago was picked up on Monday, but his whereabouts have not been confirmed by any official security agency, raising growing concern among political leaders, lawyers, and civil society groups.

Earlier this week, lawyers led by Medard Lubega Sseggona attempted to file a missing person’s report at Nateete Police Station and the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) headquarters.

However, the legal team said officers at both stations declined to record their statements, leaving them without an official entry to formally document the disappearance.

The lawyers say the refusal further complicates efforts to establish Lukwago’s legal status and location.

PFF officials have demanded that authorities urgently disclose Lukwago’s whereabouts and explain the circumstances under which he was allegedly taken.

They argue that the continued silence from security agencies amounts to a violation of due process and raises serious human rights concerns.

Lukwago, a senior opposition figure and prominent lawyer, has recently been part of the legal team representing opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and co-accused Hajji Obeid Lutale in ongoing treason-related proceedings.

The disappearance has drawn attention from opposition politicians, civil society organisations, and legal practitioners, who continue to press for clarity from security agencies.

Civil society groups and human rights defenders have also joined calls for Lukwago’s immediate release or production before a competent court, saying his continued absence undermines constitutional protections and transparency in law enforcement.

The situation has been further complicated by social media posts from Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

In one post, he wrote: “Today, I will release this IDIOT to police. I have run out of diapers. Never test me again!”

“My beloved wife Charlotte has convinced me to release the criminal Lukwago. I will release him because of my love for her,” he added

The remarks have triggered public debate, with critics questioning the seriousness of the situation and demanding official clarification on Lukwago’s legal status.
