MBARARA, Uganda
Police in Mbarara City have rescued 78 more youths who were allegedly lured into a networking scheme operated by Global Alliance In Motion (AIM) with promises of employment and financial opportunities.
The operation, conducted in the Lubiri and Lugazi areas of Mbarara City, is the latest in an ongoing crackdown on suspected recruitment networks targeting young job seekers.
According to Rwizi Region Police spokesperson SP Samson Kasasira, the rescued individuals were aged between 18 and 30 years and were found living in overcrowded rooms.
Police say many of the youths had travelled from different parts of the country after being promised jobs and better economic opportunities.
Investigators are now working to establish the full circumstances under which they were recruited and whether any criminal offences were committed.
The latest operation brings the total number of youths rescued in connection with the alleged scheme to 374 over the past three weeks, according to police.
Authorities have also arrested several suspects believed to be involved in recruiting and accommodating the victims.
Police have not yet released the total number of people currently facing charges as investigations continue.
This case has renewed concerns about the growing number of unemployed young people being targeted by individuals and organizations promising quick jobs, overseas opportunities, or financial success.
Security officials have repeatedly warned the public to verify recruitment offers and employment opportunities before making payments or travelling to unfamiliar locations.
Police say statements are being recorded from both the rescued youths and suspects as part of ongoing investigations.
Authorities are also working with local leaders and relevant government agencies to help the affected youths return to their families and receive appropriate support where necessary.
