The African Initiative on Food Security and Environment, AIFE, has started the week in shock, after staff found their office ransacked early this Monday morning.
“Our Head of Operations arrived at our office early in the morning, only to find the doors open and the office in a state of disorder.”
After reaching out to all staff members, it was confirmed that none of them had been at the office since Saturday 10th, 4:30 PM. It became evident that our office had been raided by unknown people.” Brian Atuheire, the Executive Director said.
“Upon inspection, we discovered four computers (one desktop, three laptops) and two desk phones were stolen during the raid. We are currently reviewing the building’s CCTV footage with the security team to ascertain what happened.” The press statement released by the organisation states.
Margherita News has seen that the organisation reported a case at the Kira Road Police station.
AIFE has recently been engaged in street protests against the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP). In the recent days, they have been protesting against Chinese financial support to the project at the Chinese embassy in Kampala.
“The situation in the country is tense. With these political protests in the city, someone could think that we are also their architects because of our method of expression,”
“We believe that protest is the most effective tool of lobbying, but we are not involved in any political agenda.” Atuheire said.
He added that the raid on their work premises will not deter them from fighting for the environment and justice.
“We remain committed to our work in spite of this setback, and will continue advocating for climate justice in Uganda.”
