Buganda to sue Activist Tugume for Comments About Mayiga

The Buganda Kingdom Attorney General has written to city lawyer and political activist Gideon Tugume over his utterances that the Kingdom Prime Minister Charles Peter Mayiga received 47 billion Uganda shillings from the Kingdom Treasury, and “ate” the money.

Tugume, who is addressed as the Chief Executive Officer, Human Rights Defenders Association alleges in his video that Mayiga was getting free seedlings from the disbanded Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) and yet fleecing the Kingdom of money for the seedlings.

It is this collusion, he says, that led to the Kingdom and opposition to fight against the disbandment of the Authority, a first-time case in the history of the country.

The kingdom has now asked him to provide evidence of his utterances or “absent this, we will proceed under the assumption that your statements were made with reckless disregard for the truth or with malicious intent,” the kingdoms letter reads.

It further demands that Tugume should make an immediate public retraction of his statements, published on all social media platforms where the video has circulated, and a written apology to the Katikiro, retracting his allegations.

“Failure to comply with these demands will result in immediate legal action against you among others for defamation, libel and slander.” The kingdom warned.

The country is still reeling in the fight for and against the disbandment of UCDA that left the Mityana Municipality Member of Parliament (MP) Zaake Francis hospitalized after receiving brutal punches from the Kilak North County MP Anthony Akol.

Gideon Tugume is also controversially remembered for being the advocate for Moses Nkonge Kibalama against Kyagulanyi Ssentamu and others for allegedly grabbing the National Unity Platform (NUP) from the former.
