Four days after the United States of America went to vote, it has emerged that the final tally of the Electoral College votes is 312 against 226 in favor of Donald Trump.
This is even as Trump, the Republican Party candidate had already been projected to win decisively against his Democratic Party opponent and incumbent, Vice President Kamala Harris.
A few hours after the November 5th 2024 vote, Trump was projected to win the election after projections from several states showed that he was winning the election.
Trump has also won the popular vote by more than four million votes, garnering 70.6 million votes against Kamala’s 70.9 million.
Around the world, leaders have already congratulated Donald Trump, including Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni.
“Your Excellency, I am writing on behalf of the people of Uganda to congratulate you on the historic victory you achieved on the 5th of November, 2024. By winning both the popular and Electoral College votes, your victory was a true reflection of the feeling of the majority of citizens in the USA…” Museveni posted his message on several social media platforms.
Trump won the presidency on the Republican Party ticket in 2016 with 306 votes against Hillary Clinton’s 236, in the Electoral College. However, he lost the popular vote by about 3 million.
In 2020, Biden trounced him, getting 306 against Trump’s 232. The latter lost the popular vote too.
In the United States, each state counts its election and declares a winner. Some states can declare their result earlier than others. In some elections, a clear winner is known hours after voting, as in the 2024 race. But sometimes, it can take months, just like in the 2000 election of Bush and Al Gore.
The state of Florida counted votes, until the Supreme Court ordered them to stop, after more than four weeks.
