President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has this today officially launched Lot 1 of the Kampala Flyover Project at the Clock Tower a location commonly known as Ssaawa ya Kwiini.
This ambitious infrastructure development aimed at reducing Kampala’s notorious traffic congestion marks a major milestone in Uganda’s urban transformation efforts.
The project constructed with Japanese support is expected to enhance road safety, improve mobility and modernize the capital city’s transport network.
For years, Kampala’s Road network has struggled under the weight of an ever-growing population and increased vehicle numbers.
The city, home to over 1.5 million residents and a daily entry of travellers has been plagued by congestions, delays and economic losses due to poor traffic flow.
The Kampala Flyover Project a multi-phase development funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is designed to alleviate these challenges by introducing elevated roads, expanded intersections and improved traffic control systems.
The first phase of the project, Lot 1 covers a strategic section of the city connecting Queensway, Nsambya and Mukwano Road with key features like a multi-lane flyover to decongest Clock Tower & Queen’s Way, upgraded road networks with pedestrian walkways, modernized junctions with improved traffic signaling and dedicated lanes to separate vehicle and pedestrian movement
With Lot 1 now operational, attention shifts to Lot 2 which will extend the flyover further into the city linking Jinja Road, Yusuf Lule Road and Mukwano Roundabout.
During the commissioning, President Museveni hailed the project as a symbol of Uganda’s progress and emphasized the need for continuous infrastructure development to keep up with the city’s rapid urbanization.
“A modern city requires modern roads. We cannot continue struggling with traffic congestion when solutions like this exist. The government is committed to improving urban transport to support economic growth,” Museveni stated.
While many celebrate the new infrastructure as a step in the right direction, others argue that without better public transport systems, congestion will persist.
The Kampala Flyover Project is part of a broader vision to transform Uganda’s capital into a world-class city. Other initiatives, such as the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system and expansion of road networks will play a crucial role in determining Kampala’s transport future.
