Busoga Sub-region, Uganda – In a rare and deeply emotional moment during her campaign tour in the Busoga Sub-region today, Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Among, called on the people of Bukhooli County North to forgive their Member of Parliament, Stephen Baka Mugabi, urging the community to unite ahead of the upcoming general elections.
The event, held amidst enthusiastic gatherings of National Resistance Movement (NRM) delegates from Namutumba, Bugiri, Namayingo, and Mayuge districts, witnessed a striking scene that quickly became the talk of the region.
Stephen Baka Mugabi, visibly humbled, knelt before the voters as a symbolic gesture of apology for past mistakes and to seek their forgiveness.
While addressing the crowd, Speaker Among passionately pleaded:
“It is time to move forward as one people. We cannot afford to be divided at such a critical moment. Stephen Baka has realized his past errors and stands before you today, asking for a second chance to serve with renewed dedication.”
The Speaker’s appeal was part of her ongoing campaign for the position of 2nd National Vice Chairperson (Female) of the NRM, where she is rallying support across key districts in Busoga.
Stephen Baka Mugabi’s act of kneeling, a gesture rarely seen in Ugandan politics, sent a powerful message of humility and reconciliation.
“I stand before you humbled and ask for your forgiveness,” he said emotionally. “Let us unite and build the future of Bukhooli together.”
Political analysts suggest that this unprecedented act of contrition might sway undecided voters, especially in a constituency where tensions have previously run high.
However, the show of humility also opens debates about accountability and leadership in Uganda’s political landscape.
The Busoga sub-region remains a battleground for NRM leadership, with competition intensifying as the general election nears. Speaker Among’s call for unity and forgiveness comes at a time when political divisions risk undermining the party’s cohesion and electoral prospects.
