KALANGALA
Police in Kalangala District have arrested four suspects in connection with the alleged theft of government medicines from Bukasa Health Centre IV, authorities have confirmed.
According to Greater Masaka Regional Police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye, the suspects were arrested following an operation that led to the recovery of 60 boxes of Amoxicillin, which investigators believe were stolen from the government health facility.
Kasirye condemned the continued theft of medicines from public health facilities, describing the practice as a serious setback to healthcare service delivery.
“The theft of government medicines deprives patients of essential treatment and undermines efforts to improve healthcare services in public health facilities,” Kasirye said.
Meanwhile, Kalangala Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Kajubi Twahiika expressed concern over what he described as the growing theft of medicines in the district.
Twahiika said the vice has become widespread in Kalangala and warned that it is eroding public trust in government health services.
He called on health workers, local leaders and members of the public to work closely with security agencies by reporting anyone suspected of stealing or illegally dealing in government medical supplies.
Government medicines are procured using public funds and are meant to be provided to patients free of charge at public health facilities.
Authorities have repeatedly warned that theft and illegal sale of these medicines not only disrupt healthcare delivery but also deny vulnerable communities access to life-saving treatment.
Police said investigations into the case are continuing and that the recovered medicines will form part of the evidence as detectives establish how they were removed from Bukasa Health Centre IV and whether more suspects were involved.
