Kampala Metropolitan South Police have arrested a 53-year-old businesswoman on allegations of impersonating a State House official and obtaining money by false pretences.
Police identified the suspect as Hope Tumwebaze, a resident of Kamukuzi in Mbarara City.
According to Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, Tumwebaze is accused of falsely presenting herself as an official attached to the Office of the President in order to defraud members of the public.
Investigators allege that the suspect obtained approximately UGX60 million from victims after making false representations that she had influence within State House and could facilitate services or opportunities.
The suspect was arrested by officers attached to Kampala Metropolitan South as investigations into the alleged fraud continued.
Police said the case is being investigated on allegations of impersonation and obtaining money by false pretences, adding that the suspect is expected to be produced before court upon completion of investigations.
The Uganda Police Force has urged members of the public to verify the identity of individuals claiming to represent government offices before making any payments or entering into financial arrangements.
